- ordain Gentrification fail the Birthplace of Hip Hop?Funny how after all these years hip hop is comfort fighting to get the respect it deserves as one of the most important and vital American art forms. The New York Times ran an interesting piece on Monday spotlighting Kool Herc’s struggle to get the “otherwise unremarkable” apartment building where hip hop was born to be awarded landmark status and thus protecting it from being destroyed or stripped of its essence through renovation.
The once grimey and crimey New York streets have cleaned up significantly over the past 15 years and virtually all of the character that played a part of the vibrant street grow in the 70s and 80s has since washed away. Oh well. I guess you can always hop on a bus for a guided journey of the South Bronx. That’ll show you how it really was. Read the Story @ NYTimes com
